Investing in US Stocks? Here’s A Screener That Can Help You Make Better Investment Decisions

If you are investing in the US markets, you should know that there are about 7,000+ stocks out there to choose from. Finding good value stocks out there is a pain in the ass if you’ll do it manually. Manually means you screen stocks using Finviz or Zacks and once you find potential ones, you’ll go deeper by looking into its financial statements one by one.

Have you ever spent 8 dizzying hours only to find one potential stock to buy?

I bet no one has time for that! Not you, not even your neighbor’s cat. Unless you’re like Warren Buffett, then that would be just a normal day at the office.

I can hear you thinking: “If I have a tool that can provide me with practical value-based stock information with just one click, this could drastically cut my time and focus more on allocating my money to these potential stocks.”

This is where the BTMA Stock Analyzer comes into play.

In today’s blog post, you’ll discover how the BTMA Analyzer can help you find value stocks to enable you make better investment decisions.

This post is definitely for you if:

  • You want to help your family and friends who are currently investing in stocks by giving them practical and actionable advice using the information the BTMA Stock Analyzer will provide.

I was given the opportunity to try it out by the owner, Mr. Grant Gigliotti and here’s what I have to say.

BTMA Stock Analyzer Review: What Is It All About?

Stock screeners are the most useful investing tools in today’s rapid-changing environment. The advantage of using screeners is that it cuts your search time by almost 90%. The rest of the 10% is used to validate the facts the stock screener is giving you.

If you’re investing in US stocks, the BTMA Stock Analyzer will surely get the job done in seconds. I’ll briefly discuss what’s inside the Analyzer to give you an idea how it works and if it fits your investing needs.

The Dashboard

Here’s the dashboard looks like after you log in. You are given options to input the stock ticker you want to analyze, the exchange and the Margin of Safety.

I’ve entered ten stock tickers I want analyzed for the purpose of illustration as you can see in the screenshot. These are;

  • Nike Inc. (NKE)
  • Home Depot, Inc. (HD)
  • Johnson & Johnson (JNJ)
  • Walt Disney Company (DIS)
  • McDonald’s Corporation (MCD)
  • Kimberly-Clark Corporation (KMB)
  • Colgate-Palmolive Company (CL)
  • Coca-Cola Company (KO)
  • Procter & Gamble Company (PG)
  • Caterpillar, Inc. (CAT)

BTMA will analyze all the stocks if you click the Retrieve These Stocks button. This will take you the detailed analysis of the stock’s intrinsic values and recommendations.

The analyzer is divided into different tabs namely;

  • Essential Info
  • Summary Info
  • Company Rating
  • Stock Value
  • Pricing
  • Miscellaneous Fundamentals
  • Complete View

Essential Info Tab

This section basically tells you the recommended buy price and some relevant information such as the market sector, current price and reason for buying.

By clicking each of the tickers on the left side, you can see lots of information on the stock like the Price Upward Trend, Diluted EPS, Market Recovery, ROE, ROIC, GMP and PEG Ratio.

The screenshot below shows Nike’s Price Upward Trend. Clicking on the other tabs will display the appropriate information.

Out of the 10 stocks I analyzed, only Nike passed the buy recommendation. The next six are also good companies according to the screener but the price is not attractive to initiate a buy.

Summary Info Tab

This section shows the stock’s company rating. The criteria are based on a 5 to 10 years of company financials. According to the analyzer, the company rating accounts for five to ten years of the most important criteria of a company and provides an easy-to-understand score out of 100 points.

In my example, the first seven stocks passed but only Nike is on a bargain price.

If you’re wondering how the scoring criteria is done, the company rating tab explains it all.

Company Rating Tab

To guide you how BTMA analyzes companies, here are the scoring criteria according to the analyzer;

  • 10-Year Upward Price Per Share (17 points). A stock must have consistently increasing average annual share prices year-over-year, for a 10-year period.
  • Return On Equity (ROE) Score (16 points). A stock must have an average Return On Equity value of 16%+ over a 5-year period.
  • EPS – Earnings Per Share. Consistent And Rising Over Last 5 Years (16 points)? Diluted earnings must be consistently growing over a 5-year period.
  • Ability To Recover From Market Crash Or Downturn (15 points). A stock must show its ability to regain losses and increase share price within at least four years after a market crash or a significant downturn.
  • Return On Invested Capital (ROIC) Score (12 points). A stock must have an average Return On Invested Capital value of 16%+ over a 5-year period.
  • Gross Margin % (GMP) Score (12 points). A stock must have an average Gross Margin value of 30%+ over a 5-year period.
  • PEG Ratio (Price Earnings Growth) Score (12 points). To have a high score, a stock must have an average 5-year PEG ratio between 0 and 1.
  • Total Value Score (total of 100 points). 70 points is a good potential investment. If the company is marked as a ‘Risky Investment‘, this means that the company failed a crucial valuation criteria. If it is marked as ‘FAILED (Not Enough Data)‘, it means that the required ten years of financial data or a crucial valuation criteria is not available.

After you identify a stock as a potential investment, buying it at the right price is the next thing to do. With that, the Stock Value Tab gives the information about it.

Stock Value Tab

This tab shows the intrinsic value and the estimated value of the stock. You’ll also notice the Buffett Valuation Comparison column which according to the analyzer, views each company’s expected rate of return and compares them. The idea is that we look for excellent companies with expanding value and choose those that potentially can offer the highest rate of return.

The Buffett Valuation Comparison for Nike is illustrated in the screenshot below.

If you click the intrinsic value, the analyzer will display pertinent information such as the P/E Model, Residual Income Model and the Discounted Cash Flow Model.

The above screenshots pertains to Nike’s intrinsic value based on all three models. Getting the average of the figures will give you a value of $45.11. I like the fact that the intrinsic value is calculated using different models. It gives flexibility in the analysis.

Pricing Tab

btma stock analyzer review

This section enables you to see some statistics such as the 52-week high and low and how much upside you have on the MoS price.

In my example, you can see that Nike has a 5.86% upside based on the MoS price of $56.50. Based on the analyzer, Nike is definitely a good stock to buy today.

Miscellaneous Fundamentals Tab

btma stock analyzer review

In the Miscellaneous Fundamentals Tab, you can see other financial metrics that defines a good company such as the D/E Ratio and Current Ratio which is very common in determining a company’s leverage.

I personally look for stocks with D/E Ratios of less than 0.5 and Current Ratios of greater than 1.5.

Complete View Tab

If you want to see all the information in one tab, this section will let you see it.

Export Button

The nice part of the analyzer is that you can export the analysis on an excel spreadsheet which you can then use to track the performance on a daily basis or whichever you prefer.

Having a monitoring sheet will definitely give you an edge especially if you’re watching a handful of stocks, let’s say 10 to 30 stocks. You can key in the ticker and hit the retrieve button, export the results and analyze the data after your 9 to 5 day job.

You can then make separate spreadsheets to track the performance and change in the intrinsic value on a daily, weekly or a monthly basis. This is a very powerful tool if you want to do your own analysis.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The BTMA Stock Analyzer

Here are the advantages of using the BTMA Stock Analyzer;

  • Huge time saver in picking quality stocks to buy.
  • Analysis is based on factual data which is very simple and easy to understand.
  • Spoon feeds the information and gives actionable items to do. Perfect for investors who just want to invest and simply have no time dabbling with all those financial-related stuff.
  • Can help you in your valuations if you’re an experienced value investor.

Disadvantages include;

  • Most data provided are quantitative factors. The qualitative factors such as the management’s effectiveness, company’s future prospects and the macroeconomic conditions is not considered in the analysis. As a value investor, you have to do your own research regarding this. But don’t worry, Grant just told me that he’s currently working on adding a qualitative section to the analyzer which should be available soon.
  • Definitely not for traders who rely on technical charts for analysis.

Overall, the analyzer gives almost all the important data you need which is critical if you are doing a value-based investing strategy.

  • JRP says:

    Do we have anything similar for screening PH stocks?

    • Hi JRP,

      None that I know of. Value-based screeners are very popular in the US because of the wide array and diverse companies to choose from. With over 7,000+ stocks available, picking and valuing them one by one is not feasible. So if you’re planning to invest in US stocks, this tool can definitely help you separate the quality companies versus the less-fundamentally sound companies. And from there, you can do deep value analysis if you prefer to.
